Bulgarians Skimping on Christmas Gifts

Date: 24.12.2006

Bulgaria's people will be cautious when it comes to selecting a Christmas gift and most will not spend a lot on the holiday, a survey has showed.

Only ten percent of the population plan to spend more than BGN 100 on gifts this Christmas, according to a poll by the National Center for Public Opinion Research.

The "big spenders" are mainly aged between 30 and 50, highly educated, wealthy and citizens of capital Sofia.

Most Bulgarians - a total of 30% will only be able to spare up to BGN 20 for gifts for their loved ones. 35% are planning on getting presents in the range of BGN 50 in total, while 17% are willing to get something from BGN 50 to BGN 100.

Despite their own financial problems, some 37% of the people that took part in the survey plan on joining the ongoing Christmas charity drives.
